T3.1 Organize a workshop “Dynamic Lipid Organization in Cells”
This workshop will be organized by Kai Simons (P3), Elina Ikonen (P8), Gisou van der Goot (Geneva, guest), in Spain, possibly in San Feliu, which has all facilities required and is conveniently located close to Barcelona, or close to Bilbao. They will be assisted by a task force consisting of Felix Goñi (P7, local organizer), Hein Sprong (van Meer, P1), and Sepp Kohlwein (P12).
The workshop will consist of plenary lectures by experts in this field, plenary discussions, poster sessions and round tables. Round tables will be dedicated to technological challenges and developments and to the position of Lipidomics vs. proteomics/genomics. The workshop will be advertized via FEBS, EMBO, ELSO, ICBL and Euro Fed Lipid. Participation will be limited to investigators in the field. Besides the partners we expect some 30 scientists to attend this workshop (unless co-sponsoring is obtained, in which case more scientists can be invited). Such co-sponsoring may be sought from e.g. EMBO depending on the interest within the field. The outcome of this workshop will be reported in the journal Traffic.
T3.2 Organize a workshop “Lipidomics and Health”
This workshop with the preliminary title "Diseases related to the lipidome" (roughly 35-45 participants) will be organized in Hungary by Pam Fredman (P6), Gerd Utermann (P14), and Balázs Sarkadi (P11) as the local organizer. The task force will consist of Konrad Sandhoff (P10), Michel Lagarde (P9), Jürgen Borlak (P4), and Fran Platt (Dwek, P5). Potentially, this workshop will be organized as a satellite to the 2006 ICBL meeting in Pécs, Hungary, in which case the number of participants may be higher.
T3.3 Organize an industry meeting on applications for Metabolomics and Lipidomics
This meeting will be organized by Gerd Schmitz (P2) with the Van Meer (P1) team as local organizer, as a 1.5 day satellite meeting to the final, general meeting in the Netherlands (m22). Whereas the scientists attending the general meeting will be exposed to industry at the poster sessions and during a special session, industry has specific interests in Metabolomics and Lipidomics that are better discussed in a dedicated setting. With the industrial members on the Advisory Board, two special outside speakers will be invited to speak at this meeting.

13 For
Specific Support Actions each work package must relate to one (and only
one) of the following two possible Activity Types: Activities specific
for the Support Action , Management activities.
Objectives
The Work Package "Applications of Lipidomics" aims at distributing the methodological developments in the field of Lipidomics to the various consumers. The purpose is to push the fields of Lipid Cell Biology and Medical Lipidology. This requires an inventory of the problems and a discussion on how to apply which methodology. Finally, it is the objective to tune industry towards catering to the need of the two application fields.
|
Description of work
The organizers of the two workshops will have to identify the areas where maximal impact of methodology development is to be expected. Next, they have to choose speakers from within the consortium and from the rest of the European scientific community that can really drive the workshops. Criteria must be devised for the selection of the other participants from outside applicants. The local organizers will have to select the proper venue for the workshops, and take care of the local arrangements. Reports on the workshop will have to be written to disseminate the new information. For the industry meeting broad contacts with industry must be developed during the first phase of the SSA. The hosting team of the coordinator will have to arrange a proper setting for this meeting and create an optimal interaction with the general meeting.

Milestones and expected result
M3.1 Critical assessment of the outcome of the Cell Biology workshop as a preparation for the definition of possible spearpoints in the next EC framework programme. What methodology is exploitable for Lipidomics studies at this level? What questions can be addressed? M3.2 Critical assessment of the outcome of the Disease workshop as under M3.1. M3.3 Critical assessment of the Industry meeting. Definition of alliances between industry and the medical field for Lipidomics development.
